PRE care

Instructions for the
Perfect Spray Tan

Exfoliate
24 hours before your appointment

Exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells and creating an even surface for your tan.

Here’s how to do it right: Soak in a bath, or relax in a sauna or steamy shower for about 15-20 minutes before exfoliating. This helps soften your skin, making the exfoliation process more effective. Use a high-quality, sugar-based body scrub that has enough abrasiveness to remove dry skin gently. Avoid scrubs with oil, as they can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution. Opt for an abrasive exfoliator glove or mitt with sufficient texture to effectively remove dead skin cells. These specialized gloves offer more exfoliating power than loofahs or washcloths, ensuring a smoother canvas for your spray tan application. Exfoliate your entire body to remove dead skin cells, focusing on rough areas like knees, elbows, and ankles. This step creates a smooth canvas for the tanning solution.

Shave &
Shower

Make sure to shave the areas where you would typically remove hair, such as your legs, underarms, and bikini line, approximately 24 hours before your spray tan. Shaving ensures a smooth canvas for the tan to adhere to.

If you must shower on the day of your appointment, shower at least 4-5 hours before your appointment. If you must shower right before your appointment, shower with cooler water and finish off with a cold rinse.

Avoid using bar soaps, high pH shower products, or oil-based exfoliants, as they can negatively affect the tanning solution’s adherence to your skin.

Pre-Spray Tan Beauty Treatments

Schedule manicures, pedicures, waxes, facials, and similar treatments at least 24 hours or more before your spray tan appointment. This allows ample time for any residual oils or products to be absorbed or washed off, ensuring your skin is clean and product-free for the best spray tan adherence.

Manicures, pedicures, and facials often involve exfoliating and scrubbing the skin. These treatments can remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, which is essential for a smooth and even tan. However, if done after your spray tan, they may cause your tan to fade prematurely or unevenly.

avoid
Lotions, Makeup, perfume & skincare products

On the day of your appointment, avoid wearing lotion, makeup, perfume, deodorant, or any skincare products that might interfere with the tanning process.

If you have very dry skin/patches, please consult with us before your appointment, as you may be advised to apply lotion to hydrate your dry skin areas beforehand.

during your appointment

Technician Arrival

On the scheduled day, your spray tan artist will arrive at your location with all the necessary equipment and tanning solutions. They will bring a portable spray tan machine, a pop-up tanning tent, and the tanning solution itself.

Set Up

Your artist will set up a pop-up tanning tent in the designated area of your space. This tent provides privacy during the tanning session and helps contain any overspray. We only need about a 5’ x 5’ space for setting up.

We can set up anywhere you would like but do prefer to set up in an area of the house that has high ceilings, good lighting, and an outlet.

Color consultation

Your artist will assess your skin type, tone, and any existing tan or pigmentation. This assessment helps them determine the most suitable tanning solution and shade for you. During the consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your preferences and goals for the spray tan. You can specify the level of tan you desire, whether you want a subtle glow or a deeper tan, and any shower time restrictions. Based on the skin assessment and your preferences, the technician will mix a customized tanning solution that suits your needs. They’ll consider factors like your skin’s undertones and the level of darkness you desire.

Tanning Process

Once you’re ready, you’ll step into the tanning tent wearing minimal to no clothing or a disposable undergarment, depending on your preference. Your artist will use a handheld spray gun connected to the tanning machine to apply the tanning solution evenly across your body. They will provide specific instructions on how to stand and turn to ensure every area is covered. They will go through this process twice on your face and full body.

If you’re having professional makeup applied for an event or wedding, it’s advisable to consult with your makeup artist to determine how many coats should be applied to your face, if at all.

After the tanning application is complete, your artist will use their spray tan hose to help accelerate the drying process and powder your body. This typically takes a few minutes.

post care

maintaining the
Perfect Spray Tan

Wear Loose, Dark, Long-Sleeve Shirts & Pants

Opt for clothing that is loose, dark in color, and covers your arms and legs. Loose attire minimizes friction that can rub off the tanning solution during the initial development stage. Dark colors help reduce the visibility of any solution transfer, and long sleeves and pants provide additional protection, ensuring an even and flawless tan.

Let Your Tan Develop

Your spray tan needs time to fully develop. The recommended development time will be given to you by your artist. During this period, the tanning solution interacts with your skin, gradually darkening to your desired shade.

While your tan is developing, you will have bronzer on the top layer of your skin. The bronzer is purely cosmetic and will wash off with your first initial rinse. Because of the bronzer, your tan will appear to be developing much darker than it will actually be – don’t be alarmed!

While your tan is developing, it’s essential to avoid activities that can cause sweating or getting wet, as this can interfere with the tanning solution’s absorption and potentially lead to an uneven tan. It’s also crucial to prevent skin-on-skin contact – which means you don’t want your arms or legs rubbing against each other.

Rinse & shower

Your first shower after your spray tan application, is just a rinse. Do not use soap, shampoos, etc. Use lukewarm water to rinse off the bronzer. You’ll notice some color washing off – don’t be alarmed; this is just the bronzer and any surface residue. We recommend staying in the shower during this rinse, until the water is clear again (the bronzer is completely off your skin). Gently pat your skin dry with a towel after the rinse; avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can affect the tan’s evenness.

After the first rinse, your first proper shower usually occurs 24 hours after your spray tan appointment. In this shower, you can use a gentle, pH-balanced shower gel or soap to cleanse your skin. It’s crucial to choose a product that doesn’t contain harsh ingredients that could strip your tan. Use your hands or a soft washcloth to wash your body. Avoid scrubbing too vigorously, especially in areas where your skin is thicker or rougher. After cleansing, gently pat your skin dry with a towel as opposed to rubbing. Once you’re out of the shower, apply a hydrating, alcohol-free lotion to keep your skin moisturized, which will help extend the life of your tan.

Be gentle & Moisturize

Be Gentle with Your Skin. To maintain your tan’s longevity, handle your skin with care. Avoid vigorous rubbing when drying off after a shower, as this can cause premature fading.
Moisturize Daily! Moisturize right when you get out of the shower and continue to do so at least twice a day. Keeping your skin moisturized helps extend the life of your tan. Use a hydrating, alcohol-free lotion daily to maintain your skin’s health and your tan’s vibrancy. When you have a spray tan, it’s advisable to use products with ingredients that are gentle, hydrating, and designed to maintain the quality and longevity of your tan.

Always check product labels and consider consulting with your spray tan technician for specific product recommendations tailored to your tan.
